As Sunbathers Ran From Attack, Popular Photo Captures Beach Patrol Dashing ‘All Out’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, has always considered the renowned shoreline as her own backyard. On that particular weekend evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, detected pops ringing out around the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching states. Exiting her apartment, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw signaled a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the street, talking to a couple who had run up the hill in their swimwear, she became aware of someone approaching from behind. It was a beach patrol officer, dashing to Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was alone moving in the opposite way that everyone was trying to escape from, carrying that big kit and barefoot … He was sprinting at something that certainly every part of you would tell you to move in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully maximum effort sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage During Tragedy

The photo that Ching snapped of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous moments of heroism in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, law enforcement and paramedics attending to many victims.

Collective Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the beach facility adjacent to the scene of the incident becoming a impromptu treatment center. It was shared that colleagues were also seen responding bravely, including going into the water to rescue people who were struggling.

Following the events, comments of appreciation circulated widely. One post expressed thanks for the individuals who exhibited that “goodness will always overcome evil”.

The squad of rescuers later shared a statement, noting they were “processing what occurred”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful messages and support. We are overwhelmed by the compassion directed at our team,” the team wrote. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the aim that it helps those affected.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many full-time lifeguards, remarked that the crew acted heroically from the moment the violence started right into late that evening.

“People have shared so many emotional stories, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” commented a mayor.

“These individuals show altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic beaches protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on that evening should be commended.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the horror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much positivity we have seen in the presence of such hatred.”
