California is Fully Drought-Free for the First Time in 25 Years.

Following 25 long years, not a single part of the state is experiencing water scarcity. This significant achievement comes on the heels of difficult years marked by insufficient rainfall that intensified blaze threats and pressured its massive agricultural sector.

A Chart Shows No Drought

Thursday's report from the U.S. Drought Monitor illustrated that all of California is clear of any level of drought. This shift resulted from weeks of heavy precipitation that helped fill water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville well above their historic averages.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” stated a local meteorologist.

Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons

The journey here included severe and lethal winter storms that struck the state in recent years, causing widespread flooding, power outages, and fatalities. While those storms helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.

As late as late December, areas like northeastern California were still classified as unusually parched. Subsequent downpours at the start of the new year finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Presents a Challenge

Yet, authorities caution that being out of drought does not mean complete water security. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack show it at roughly seven-tenths of the historical norm.

This frozen reservoir, which provides a significant portion of the state's water as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for long-term water security. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is premature to determine the outlook for the coming year.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” explained a hydrology section chief. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to increase by April 1st so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Even as the official status indicates no dryness, attention turns to maintaining this positive water situation during the months to come.
