The esteemed football figure has made clear that he is avoiding a comeback in football management, explaining that it would be challenging to duplicate the higher calling he encountered as the national team coach.

The former coach indicated his intention to dedicate his efforts toward working with the youth and countering what he labeled a pervasive negative narrative now prevalent in the country.

Embracing Fresh Opportunities Outside of Coaching

Speaking on air, Southgate was questioned on talk linking him with available jobs in the English football and elsewhere.

“Leading my country gave my work in football a deeper meaning and purpose,” he answered. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

A Passion for Mentorship

Ahead of the launch of his new title, his leadership-focused book, Southgate emphasized that he is deeply committed about offering guidance for teenagers, drawing on experiences from his tenure as leader of the England team from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

He feels that his time leading the national team, during which the team transformed from being strongly criticized to greatly admired, holds broader applications.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he noted. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Raising Children and Influencing Youth

Speaking from his experience as a father, Southgate remarked: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He continued: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Unity Over Division

He insisted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often centers on division.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he said. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

Southgate’s upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is scheduled to present further insights on guidance and national identity drawn from his notable professional journey.
