New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “But I will say this, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities shared surveillance images earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries were reported.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “In fact, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in March.
