Cameron Norrie secured the most notable victory of his career by rallying from a early deficit to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Even though he had earlier defeated Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win marks Norrie's maiden victory over a sitting world No 1.

"Massive. So big for me," said Norrie, who is now the newest UK male player in history to beat a world No 1. "Returning from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualifying rounds here. I just tried to embrace my tennis in the second half of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the biggest win of my tennis journey, my initial victory over the top player and probably the strongest competitor in the world right now."

The British player, positioned No 31, also halted Alcaraz's impressive run of nine straight final appearances and 17 straight premier event victories, which was the finest stretch of performances in the Spaniard's early professional path.

Alcaraz seemed to be progressing easily to a win at the start as he sailed through the opening set. However, Norrie steadily worked himself into contention by serving with improved accuracy and dragging the Spaniard into extended, demanding rallies. His unceasing steadiness and dependability slowly left its mark.

Through most of the match, the world number one delivered strong serves but he struggled badly to get his timing right off his groundstrokes. The young star appeared notably struggling striking his signature shot, which has been the top weapon in the game for a large part of this season, committing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a combined of 54 unforced errors. On the other side, Norrie gave his opponent so few mistakes, keeping up his reliability, athleticism and power all match while serving efficiently and choosing his moments to advance forward and play aggressively.
