Pedro Forward Scores Treble as Chelsea Deliver Manager Rosenior with Happy Return to Hull
Against a backdrop of freezing rain, snow, and a biting wind from the waters of the Humber Estuary, combined with a resolute Hull City side pushing hard for a top-flight place, this presented all the makings of a difficult night's work for Chelsea.
"We might have scored more but Hull are a good team and it was a difficult tie; I am delighted with the display," he said. "Hull City means a lot to me so it was great to get a good reception from the fans of fans. The application of the lads was superb."
Liam Rosenior has this place close to his heart, considering part of his relatives hail from Hull and his enjoyable spell in management of the Tigers. This happy association was extended with a magnificent display from his team, who ultimately sauntered into the fifth round of the famous old competition.
Deadly Edge Seals Comprehensive Victory
Three days after letting slip a 2-0 advantage in the Premier League, there was a hint of vulnerability about them going into this intriguing cup clash. The packed home support evidently felt it too, but the London side handled the task perfectly.
Rosenior rang the changes, making multiple of them to his starting lineup. The match could and perhaps should have been decided earlier than it actually was, with two the Brazilian winger and the forward at fault for missing excellent chances to put their side ahead in the first half.
But, fortunately for the away team, Pedro Neto was in a far more clinical frame of mind. He opened the deadlock with a marvellous distance strike, which acted as the spark for Chelsea to assume command of proceedings. By full time, they had four, with the forward netting three of them for a superb three-goal haul.
The Forward's Response and Influence
The home side displayed plenty of fight throughout, but the clearer opportunities always fell Chelsea’s way. The winger ought to have broken the deadlock when he rounded keeper Dillon Phillips before unbelievably shooting over. Delap then had a comparable horror moment in front of goal against his former club.
He blocked a the goalkeeper's clearance which bounced off the crossbar, and Delap began to run away thinking the ball had crossed the line. It hadn’t, and by the time he understood, Hull's defenders had reacted to avert the danger.
Delap had his head in his hands after that moment, but he was hugely instrumental from there on out, registering 3 key passes. The first was for the opening goal as his through ball teed up his teammate to score from outside the box. Shortly after the second half began, it was two as the forward's corner went straight in through Phillips's legs.
Contest Put Beyond Doubt and Attention Shifts
Seven minutes after the second, the match was effectively ended as a magnificent dribble from Delap teed up Estêvão to tap into an empty net. The hat-trick hero then finished his treble as the provider once again played the decisive pass for the striker to calmly convert by a stranded goalkeeper.
By that stage, the work Hull had done in the opening thirty minutes had long since erased. Their focus must now switch back to securing a return to the top division under Sergej Jakirovic, who left out a number of key individuals with that aim in mind.
"In my opinion we earned at least one goal but if we play like this we will be in a strong position in the league," he said. "Keep fighting, maybe in the next games this can be a good example of how we should play."
There was plenty of effort to the final whistle, and they almost claimed a consolation when Lewis Koumas hit a post in stoppage time. But this was the Blues' night, and another positive step forward for their recently-appointed manager at a place he is familiar with intimately.
FA Cup Omens Are Good
The result made for an ultimately straightforward evening’s work, and the cup competition signs are good from here for Chelsea. They have faced Hull on three previous occasions in this competition in the past ten years and every single time, they have progressed to make the showpiece. Much remains to be done in that respect, but this was another significant positive for Rosenior.
