This production, though, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed image promoted by Russian state media that, within Russia, it functions as a compliment rather than a critique.

The Manufactured Strongman

Over a long period, the Kremlin and its entertainment industry have worked together to craft a tailor-made persona of Putin. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, a former spy reimagined as a local 007 who consistently understands more than he reveals.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a TV series released last fall, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from chaos. While he is called a different name, the implication is unmistakable: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals often end up reinforcing this identical story rather than debunking it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to undermine the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a consequence, shifting the focus to the political machinery around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, Putin is presented as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to steady the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. His response is that he would rather govern from the shadows, seeking enduring influence.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind shaped by destiny. In reality, these events ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one ever begged Putin to accept the role. The position was in essence a selection process with many contenders. Central to the selection stood an influential oligarch from the previous administration who planned to control the country de facto.

• His list included various figures, including an opposition leader later murdered and a former spy chief.
• Per a journalist who studied his rise, the chosen candidate merely met the required parameters: obedient, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.

Curiously, the shift to framing him as a “007” may in part have been inspired by the actor's arrival as James Bond. The grittier interpretation prompted local outlets and social media to make comparisons with their leader. Mashup posters replacing Craig’s face with Putin’s appeared on city centers, feeding the increasing trend to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an star well-liked by Russian audiences, the Kremlin are likely to seize the chance to portray this choice as a small victory. Its omission of public dissent, the opposition, or key figures from its narrative, even though it includes the past decade, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

Domestically, the president is often an omnipotent figure who never appears on screen. He is signaled through photographs or calls “from above”. In this new film, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently echo the exact legends it might seek to examine.
