Red Cross Assists Militant Group in Search for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza

A Red Cross official confirmed that its representatives accompanied members of Hamas into zones of Gaza still under Israeli military authority to facilitate the search for the bodies of Israeli hostages.

Truce Terms and Hostage Bodies Return

As part of the truce negotiated by the United States, which took effect on 10 October, the group is required to hand over the remains of all Israeli hostages promptly. As a reciprocal measure, Israel has agreed to hand over the remains of 15 Palestinians for every Israeli body returned.

The organization has to date handed back the remains of 15 of those held captive but none in the past five days, as some of those remains are believed to be in locations beyond the ceasefire boundary designating the temporary truce line.

ICRC Involvement as Neutral Intermediary

“At the request of the involved sides, the Red Cross joined a party to the conflict as the group looked for the bodies of the deceased individuals beyond the military-established ‘yellow boundary’,” said a spokesperson for the organization.

She continued: “The parties to the conflict established the modalities of the mission and delegated the ICRC to act as a neutral intermediary. We was not involved in the discussions.”

The official further clarified: “Our team was not involved in the search for the bodies nor does it engage in the retrieval of remains.”

International Humanitarian Law and Duties

According to global legal norms, it is the duty of the parties engaged in a hostilities to search for, gather, and retrieve the bodies of the deceased.

US Ultimatum and Local Recovery Operations

On Saturday, the American leader issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the organization. “Hamas is going to have to start returning the bodies of the hostages who died, including American citizens, promptly, or the other countries participating in this great peace will take action,” he wrote on his social‑media platform.

When the two-day window approached, Hamas, joined by the ICRC, teamed up with Egyptian teams, who were granted permission by Israeli authorities to look for remains past the line indicating the Israeli military’s pullback inside the territory. An official representative said the delegation would use heavy machinery and trucks in the operation.

Official Verification and Press Coverage

The news was supported by an unnamed Israeli official, who told local press that members of the group had been allowed to enter areas of the region under military authority to search for the bodies of captives, alongside Egypt’s and ICRC personnel.

“To achieve this goal, Hamas members were permitted to pass the yellow line,” the official was quoted as stating.

Video released by a regional network seemed to show individuals of a specialized group – belonging to the organization’s military wing tasked with holding captives – accompanying a Red Cross vehicle in a specific location close to a southern city, which lies outside Israeli military control.

Challenges in Locating Captive Bodies

Efforts to locate for the bodies of Israeli hostages has turned into one of the most delicate matters in the ceasefire reached between the two sides. However, the effort to find the bodies has been difficult from the outset, given the presence of an approximate enormous amount of debris across the territory, where, according to local health authorities, at least 10,000 Palestinians are listed as missing, trapped under the debris.

Conflicting Claims on Body Location

The group has stated it lacks information on the precise whereabouts of all the bodies, saying it has been unable to communicate with several of its teams that had been detaining the captives and were reportedly killed during Israeli bombardments.

However, an official representative asserted that the organization was aware of the locations of the bodies. “Should the group made more of an effort, they would be able to retrieve the bodies of our hostages,” the official said.

American Position and Weapons Surrender Discussions

Although the American leader has acknowledged that a portion of the bodies are hard to access, he said that “the rest they can return now and, for some reason, they are not.”

“It may have to do with the disarming of the group,” he added.

Washington has said it has obtained assurances from the organization that the faction will disarm, though no specific schedule has been set. The militant organisation remains reluctant to give up its arms without solid assurances about the fate of its members.
