Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an raid targeting a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.
The armed faction invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.
The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before breaching the school's outer barrier and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, according to a statement.
A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, referred to locally as criminal elements, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.
Area inhabitants informed journalists that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.
The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.
