The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting
At least 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.
The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She described the events before the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
