The Divinity Developer Explains Its Implementation of AI Tools for Upcoming Divinity

The studio behind hit RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its upcoming project, generating immense excitement within the gaming community. However, subsequent remarks from the company's co-founder have added a new dimension to the narrative, touching on the developer's approach toward AI tools.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a latest statement, Larian's director explained that the company is utilizing AI technology for particular supporting functions. These include developing presentation materials, producing rough visual ideas, and drafting placeholder dialogue.

Notably, Vincke made clear that the end assets in the game will be created solely by human creatives. "Larian is writing everything ourselves," he said.

Given that visual development is being particularly mentioned — we right now have 23 concept artists and have roles to fill for further talent.

Everything we do is additive and aimed at enabling creatives to spend additional energy on making content.

Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision

The news of AI usage originally provoked concern among portions of the fanbase. In reply, Vincke provided additional detail on online platforms.

"At Larian, we employ these tools to research ideas, just like we use the internet and art books," he wrote. "In the initial ideation stages we use it as a simple sketch for composition which we then substitute with authentic artwork."

He continued, "Our studio recruits artists for their creative vision, not for their capacity to replicate what a machine suggests."

Three Pillars of Practical Application

Vincke had earlier detailed the studio's focused method to machine learning, categorizing its use into primary functions:

  • Handling Monotonous Jobs: This includes refining animations, dialogue cleanup, and Larian-specific work like retargeting animations.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using technology to quickly build basic versions of gameplay ideas to validate concepts prior to complete production.
  • Future Potential for Gameplay: Researching how AI could eventually enhance innovative gameplay, particularly in creating dynamic reactions in a complex RPG.

He clearly noted that key artistic disciplines — such as music composition — are are absolutely not fields where the company is reducing artistic involvement. In fact, Larian is expanding its staff in these exact positions.

"Our studio is not releasing a game with AI-generated content, nor considering cutting staff to replace them with artificial intelligence," Vincke concluded.
