The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.

A new term emerged a couple of months into the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, as stated by health professionals such as paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for doctors to care for a young patient who has been bereaved of their whole family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare Despite a Reported Truce

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs assert that violations are still being committed. The Israeli government disputes these allegations, just as it denies all charges it is accused of. But while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, apparently, is what international harmony resembles.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be completely different.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A contest that initially championed togetherness has transformed into a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
