The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at Eighty-One Years of Age

The world grieves the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican reggae singer and performer whose captivating vocal talent played a key role in popularizing the reggae genre worldwide. He passed away at the age of eighty-one.

“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” wrote his wife Latifa Chambers on social media. “I am grateful for his family, close friends, fellow artists and colleagues who shared his journey. To all his fans globally, please know that your encouragement was his strength throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” Her post was co-signed by their children, their son and daughter.

Cliff was beloved for hit songs such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat musical style and uplifting spirit earned him a large and loyal following.

Beyond his music accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972’s drama film The Harder They Come, a role that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a landmark of film in Jamaica.

Jimmy Cliff was one of just a handful of artists, alongside the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the prestigious Order of Merit from Jamaica.
