During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his term.

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
